Common questions
About coaching
-
Practical help with the logistics of transition. Your coach works through the tasks with you, puts them in an order that makes sense, keeps track of what comes next, and points you to providers we trust. Sessions are working meetings. You leave each one knowing the next thing to do.
-
No. Coaching covers the practical side: documents, appointments, insurance, conversations at work and home. Your coach won't diagnose you, treat anything, or ask you to process your past. If you'd like therapy too, our sister practice Arrive Therapy offers it.
-
No. There's nothing to qualify for. You don't need a diagnosis, a referral, or anyone's permission. You've already decided what you want, and we help you get it done.
-
Every Arrive coach has familiarity with transitioning their gender. They've filed the paperwork, sat through the consults, and made the phone calls. They know where the process stalls and who to call when it does. Meet the coaches.
-
Coaching works best once you know what you want and need help getting there. If you're still exploring who you are, a therapist is usually the better fit for that part. Arrive Therapy was built for exactly this, and you can come back to coaching whenever you're ready.
-
No. Plenty of our clients start later in life. A longer history usually means a longer paper trail, with more accounts, more records, and sometimes a mortgage, a career, or kids in the picture. That's exactly the kind of sorting coaching is for.
What we help with
-
With the order. Most transition tasks can't begin until another one finishes, and starting in the wrong place can cost months. Your coach maps your version of the sequence in the first session, based on where you live, where you were born, and what you want to change.
-
Yes. We help you prepare the court petition, understand what the hearing involves, and plan everything that comes after it: Social Security, your driver's license, your bank, your pharmacy, and the long list of accounts that still have your old name on them.
-
Yes. The rules for passports, state IDs, and birth certificates vary by agency and by state, and some of them have changed recently. Your coach will work out which ones apply to you and in what order to tackle them.
-
Yes. We help you find surgeons, get on the waitlists you want, prepare for your consultations, and plan the recovery you'll actually need, including time off work, help at home, and transportation. That applies to top surgery, bottom surgery, facial surgery, and anything else you're planning.
-
Yes. We can help you find a prescriber, prepare for your first appointment, and keep track of labs and refills. Your coach won't give medical advice about hormones. That stays between you and your prescriber.
-
Coaches don't write letters, because letters require a licensed clinician. Arrive Therapy offers surgery letter assessments, and you don't need to be an existing client to book one. Your coach can help you plan when to get the letter so it doesn't hold up your surgery date.
-
Yes. A denial is often where the process starts, not where it ends. We read your plan for what it actually covers, help with prior authorizations, and help you build an appeal. We also help you budget for the costs insurance won't touch.
-
Your coach helps you decide on timing, who to tell first, and what your employer is required to do once they know. We also help you get ahead of situations where your old name might resurface, like a background or credit check.
-
Your coach helps you plan the order of the conversations, prepare for the harder ones, and decide who doesn't need to be told at all. That includes parents, partners, kids, and friends. Some people use a letter. Some people want a script. We help with whichever fits.
Neurodivergent clients
-
Often, yes. Transition depends on forms, phone calls, and waiting, which is exactly the kind of work many ADHD and autistic people find challenging. We work one task at a time, write scripts before hard phone calls, keep the tracking document for you, and adjust session length to your capacity.
None of this requires a diagnosis.
-
Having someone present while you do a task you've been putting off. Your coach can stay on the line while you fill out a form or wait on hold. For a lot of people, that's what finally gets the form done.
-
Accountability Check-Ins are 30-minute sessions for exactly that. They're short, cost less, and help you keep moving between longer meetings.
Privacy
-
For some people privacy is a preference. For us it has been a safety plan. Coaching is never billed to insurance, so no claim gets filed, no diagnosis gets attached to your name, and no statement arrives at a shared address. We hold coaching records to the same security standards we use for clinical records.
-
We work with plenty of people who aren't. You can ask for generic appointment reminders that don't mention coaching or the practice name, and choose how we contact you. Tell your coach who shouldn't hear from us and we'll work around it.
-
No. Coaching isn't a medical service, so it isn't billed to insurance and we don't issue superbills. The upside is that nothing about your coaching ends up in an insurance record.
